Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary Day Trip from Ahmedabad

The itinerary:

Start your day very early in the morning (ideally before dawn) from Ahmedabad to ensure you reach the sanctuary just as the sun rises, which is the prime time for bird activity.

Nalsarovar Lake Boating & Bird Watching: Upon reaching Gujarat’s largest wetland sanctuary, embark on a serene country boat ride across the expansive, shallow lake. As the morning light breaks, witness a spectacular avian display. If you visit during the winter months, look out for vibrant migratory flocks including rosy pelicans, lesser and greater flamingos, sarus cranes, and white storks. Enjoy the incredibly peaceful ambiance of the marshlands as your boat gently glides through the tall reeds and aquatic plants.

Dhrabla Island & Watchtower: Your boat ride will typically navigate through the wetlands to one of the central islets, most notably Dhrabla Island (locally called Bet). Climb the constructed watchtower for a breathtaking, panoramic view of the 120-square-kilometer lake dotted with over 30 tiny islands. Take some time to relax, soak in the natural beauty, and perhaps try some rustic local snacks like Gathiya or the indigenous red berry fruits (‘Pillu’) found on the island.

Abhiruchi Kendra (Interpretation Center): After returning to the main shores, visit the Abhiruchi Kendra interpretation center located near the entrance. Spend some time learning about the fascinating 10,000-kilometer migration routes of the birds, the rich biodiversity of this Ramsar-recognized wetland, and the delicate underwater ecosystem that supports over 250 species of avian life.
